My aunt said my cornbread was too sweet and it made me rethink our recipe

She told me at a family picnic last summer that our version tasted like cake, which made me check the original card. I cut the sugar from a full cup to just a quarter cup and now it's perfect with chili. Has anyone else had a family recipe tweak that actually made it better?

My grandma's meatloaf recipe called for two whole cups of breadcrumbs. It was always so dry. I saw a cooking show where they talked about using soaked bread instead. I swapped the crumbs for a few slices of wet white bread torn up. The difference is crazy, it's so much more tender now.

Two cups of breadcrumbs is the classic way for a reason. That extra dryness soaks up all the pan grease and gives you a solid, sliceable loaf. Wet bread just makes the whole thing mushy in the middle. Your grandma probably liked a firm texture that holds its shape on the plate, not some soggy pile. Sometimes tradition gets it right the first time.

Is it bad that I've made both versions and still can't tell which one I like more? I mean, maybe my taste buds are just broken.

Wow, I was totally on team breadcrumbs for years because that's how my mom made it. But I tried the wet bread trick last month and it completely changed the game. The texture is just so much better, like it actually stays moist instead of drying out. I get the whole tradition thing, but sometimes a small switch makes a huge difference. I'm never going back to the dry crumbs now.
