Spent $60 on a digital meat thermometer and it saved my Thanksgiving turkey

I always just used the pop-up timer that comes with the bird... but last year I decided to buy a ThermoPro probe thermometer after my sister kept raving about hers. The turkey came out perfectly moist and not overdone at 165 degrees in the breast. Has anyone else had luck with those or do you just go by touch?

Oh man, the pop up timer is SUCH a gamble though! Did you end up getting the ThermoPro with the wire that stays in the oven or one of the instant read ones?

Man I used to think those pop up timers were fine honestly. Like I figured they were tested enough that they'd work okay. But after reading this and thinking back yeah I totally had dry turkey more times than not. You're right its basically just guessing. I got the instant read one actually but now I'm wondering if I shoulda gone with the oven safe probe instead. Either way I'm convinced now that guessing with a dumb plastic button is not the move.

Honestly can't believe you used the pop-up timer for years, those things are known to pop way too late and dry out the meat. I switched to a ThermoPro with the oven-safe probe last year after ruining two turkeys in a row, never looking back. Ngl the difference between guesswork and actual temp is night and day, especially for the dark meat.
