Update: Found a clue in my dad's old cookbook about his famous chili.

My dad's chili recipe was always a mystery because he never wrote down the amounts. Growing up, the smell of it cooking meant our weekly family time. I was going through his old notes and saw he always added a pinch of cocoa powder at the end. That tiny change makes all the difference, doesn't it? Now I make it just like he did.

That's awesome you found his secret. A tiny bit of cocoa powder works in so many things, doesn't it? Those little touches are what make a recipe feel like home.

Does burning the garlic count as my secret family touch?

My grandma used to do something similar with her meatloaf. She would sneak a little bit of cinnamon into the mix, and nobody could ever figure out why hers tasted better than anyone else's. It wasn't much, just a whisper of it, but it changed the whole flavor. Those hidden touches really are what family cooking is all about. Makes me wonder what other little secrets are out there in people's kitchens, you know?
