Used to be a marshmallow-only s'mores snob but a campfire in Vermont changed it
I always thought you had to use marshmallows for s'mores, period. My aunt brought out her stash of homemade peanut butter cookies last summer at a campsite near Burlington. She said try these instead of graham crackers and I rolled my eyes but gave in. Honestly the salty peanut butter with chocolate and toasted marshmallow was incredible, way better than the original. Has anyone else swapped crackers for cookies in a recipe and had it actually work out?

Tbh you hit on something real here. People get stuck in routines with food and think the original way is the only way. Same thing happens with burgers - everyone swears by a brioche bun but a good potato roll or even a grilled english muffin can change the whole thing. @hugomurray's neighbor proves my point with those Oreos too. Even if it gets messy, sometimes breaking the rules opens up a whole new version of something simple. We replaced graham crackers with vanilla wafers on a job site once just cause that's what was in the truck and it worked fine. Not everything needs to be perfect to be good.

Heard a story from my neighbor who tried using Oreos instead of graham crackers at a family reunion. He said the chocolate cookie shell got all melty with the marshmallow and it was a messy disaster but everyone loved it. Not sure I'd try it myself but he swears by it now.

Is your neighbor the kind of guy who just throws things together and hopes for the best? I gotta say, Oreos and marshmallows sound like a sugar bomb waiting to happen but also kind of genius. Messy food is usually the best food anyway, who cares if it falls apart when it tastes that good. I'd absolutely try it, just maybe with a napkin in hand.
