Can we talk about the actual weight of a draft horse shoe?

I was reading an old farrier journal from the 80s and saw that a standard shoe for a Belgian can weigh over 4 pounds. I always thought they were heavy, but that's a solid chunk of steel to shape and nail on. Anyone else come across stats that made you pause?

Ever tried a magnetic apron to hold the shoe while you fit it? Takes a ton of strain off your wrist so you can focus on the swing.

What gets me is the sheer physics of the swing. A farrier has to lift that 4 pound shoe, hold it against a hot hoof, and shape it with one hand while swinging a heavy hammer with the other. That's not just strength, it's crazy control and stamina. My arms get tired just thinking about doing that all day, for multiple horses. The respect for that job went way up after I held a piece of steel that heavy.

You're right about the weight, but honestly the real skill isn't in the swing. It's in the fitting and the trimming of the hoof first. A perfect swing on a bad fit is a lame horse. The hammer part is just the final step, and you build up that muscle fast. Most guys I know say the back pain from bending over is way worse than arm tiredness.
