Just found out hoof testers can be off by up to 15% if you don't calibrate them yearly

Was reading through an old issue of American Farriers Journal from 2019 and a study showed that even brand new testers can read wrong if they sit in a hot truck for a season. Has anyone else checked theirs after a summer of work?

Always figured hoof testers were pretty much foolproof. Thought they just worked, you know? Never even crossed my mind to check them after a hot summer. But that study makes total sense now. All that plastic and metal sitting in a hot truck, it's gotta warp or loosen up something inside. I bet mine have been reading funky for years and I never knew. Definitely gonna check mine first thing next season.

carter.laura I read a blog post that said heat makes the plastic handles expand and throw off the readings.
