My apprentice keeps using the same rasp for the finish on every hoof
I've seen him do it three times this week, and it's leaving a rough surface that catches on the clinch block. How do you get someone to understand the difference between a coarse and a finishing cut? Anyone have a good way to explain it?

You ever notice how some people just don't get that different jobs need different tools? It's like trying to clean a window with a scrub brush meant for a driveway.

Worst part is when they insist the wrong tool is "more efficient" because it's what they already own. Like yeah, your driveway brush is faster at destroying the window.

My old boss at the Pine Creek barn had a rule about this. He'd make you feel the rasp with your eyes closed, then run your thumb over a finished hoof. That rough feel on the clinch block is your proof it's wrong. Sometimes you have to show them the problem their way creates, not just tell them the right way. It's about the feel of the job, not just getting it done.
