I had a whole batch of dye run on me last Tuesday
I was trying to do an ombre effect on some linen for a skirt, using this powder dye I got online. Mixed it up like the packet said, but when I dipped the fabric, the color just bled out everywhere instead of staying where I put it. I mean, the water turned this murky brown and the gradient was totally gone. I think maybe the water was too hot, like I let it get over 140 degrees or something. Had to rinse it for ages and the whole piece just ended up a flat, dull color. Ruined about three yards of fabric I'd been saving. Has anyone else had dye just not take? What's the trick to getting a clean fade without it running?

Sounds like your dye went for a swim instead of staying put. Hot water can definitely make it bleed out like that. Next time try cooler water and maybe a different brand of dye.

So which brand actually stays put?
