PSA: My whole design process changed after one trip to a fabric market in LA.

Used to just sketch and hope for the best. Now I start with the actual material in my hands, like this amazing deadstock silk I found for $8 a yard. How do you guys find your starting point for a piece?

Hit up local thrift stores for old curtains or bedsheets. The cheap fabric lets you test a pattern without stressing about wasting good material.

My buddy did the thrift store curtain thing for a mock-up. He found these wild 70s floral sheets for three bucks. The pattern was so busy it hid all his stitching mistakes, which was great because that first jacket had a lot of them. He said it was the most stress-free he'd ever been while sewing.

But cheap fabric teaches bad habits.
