Question about a dress I saw at a wedding in Savannah last month

I was at my cousin's wedding in Savannah last month and one of the bridesmaids had this amazing dress. It was a deep green color, not satin but not chiffon either, with these little pleats that started at the waist and went all the way down the skirt. I think there were maybe a hundred tiny pleats total. It moved so well when she walked but still had great shape. I've been sketching my own version but I can't figure out what that fabric could have been. Has anyone worked with a fabric that holds a sharp pleat like that but still has a nice drape?

Could be a wool crepe, holds pleats well.

That sounds exactly like a silk georgette. Wool crepe is too heavy for what you're describing. I had a skirt made from silk georgette with knife pleats, and it did that exact thing, held the shape perfectly but floated when I moved. You need to get a sample and test the pleating with an iron.

Oh man, @sageadams is totally right. I once tried to pleat a wool crepe for a project and it came out looking like a sad accordion, way too stiff. Silk georgette is the move. That floaty, almost weightless drape is so specific. You get that sharp pleat at the hem but the whole thing just flows when you walk. My attempt with the heavier fabric just hung there, no life at all. Definitely get a sample first.
