Ran into a stranger at Joann Fabrics who convinced me to ditch patterns entirely

This older woman in the cutting line saw me struggling with a Vogue pattern and just grabbed my arm and said 'throw that thing away honey, just drape it straight on your body.' She spent 20 minutes showing me how to pin a muslin right there next to the quilting fabric. Has anyone else had a random stranger completely change your sewing approach like that?

You know, I used to be skeptical of people who sewed without patterns. I thought they were just being artsy or showing off. But about two years ago, a woman at a fabric swap did something similar with me. She took the dress form I had, wrapped a piece of cotton around it, and started pinning while explaining how the fabric would fall. It completely changed how I think about fit. Patterns are great for learning construction, but they can't teach you how fabric behaves on your own body. That random lady was right. Sometimes the best sewing advice comes from someone who doesn't care about rules.

That lady sounds like a fabric fairy godmother minus the wand.
