Vent: My favorite linen shirt gave up on me right before a big meeting

I was getting ready for a client pitch last Thursday, feeling pretty good, and I grabbed this light blue linen shirt I've had for about three years. It was my go-to for looking put together but not stuffy. As I was buttoning it up, the entire side seam from the armpit down just split open, like a zipper. I heard the thread pop, and there was a solid six-inch tear. I had to scramble and wear a boring cotton polo instead, which threw off my whole vibe. The shirt wasn't even that old, but I guess all the washing and wearing finally did it in. I'm thinking maybe linen needs a different kind of seam, like a French seam, to handle the stress better. Has anyone else had a trusted piece of clothing fail at the worst time, and what did you do to fix it or stop it from happening again?

Hate when that happens. Linen is tough but the seams are always the weak point. A French seam would help, but flat fell seams are even stronger for that kind of stress. Had a pair of work pants blow out the same way once. You can get it repaired, but the fabric around the tear is probably worn thin too.

Isn't the fabric itself just worn out, rubys80, not the seam type?

Flat fell seams are a game changer for real, way stronger than French seams.
