Walking through downtown, I keep seeing patchwork accents on everyday clothes

In my experience, this shows up a lot on denim jackets and canvas bags with mismatched fabric squares. Your mileage may vary, but I think it's a clever way for designers to use up scrap material and promote sustainability. Take this with a grain of salt, but the handmade feel gives each piece a unique, personal vibe that mass-produced items lack.

Oh man, I feel that. My old backpack is basically held together by patches at this point (a weird plaid on one strap, some corduroy on the other). It's got more character than anything I could buy new. There's something really honest about seeing the seams and the different fabrics all together. It just feels more real, you know?

So is the appeal mostly about the look, or does the story behind the repair matter more? @robertbrown, your backpack sounds like it has a history. That personal history is what separates a real worn-in piece from something just made to look old.

Honestly, it's the weird fixes that get me. My old jacket has a pocket sewn shut with bright orange thread because I lost the needle for my black spool. It looks ridiculous, but that's the whole point.
