Warning: my silk dye test in the garage went weird

I tried to dye some white silk for a dress last week with a new liquid dye from a craft store. I mixed it in a plastic bucket like the box said, but I used warm water instead of hot. The color came out patchy and lighter than the picture on the package. I learned that silk really needs that hot water to take the dye evenly. Has anyone else had this happen with a specific fabric type?

Oh man, I totally get it! I used to think water temp was just a suggestion (you know, close enough is fine). But I ruined a whole batch of cotton shirts once by using lukewarm water when the dye called for hot. @the_mila is spot on about the fibers opening up. That one mess taught me to follow those instructions to the letter now.

Yeah, silk is super finicky about temperature. That hot water opens up the fibers so the dye can get in properly. Always follow the dye instructions for the fabric type exactly.

That line about following the dye instructions exactly is so true for everything now. It feels like every single thing, from cooking to tech gadgets, has its own weirdly specific rules you have to follow or it just won't work right. Makes you miss when stuff was just simpler and more forgiving.
