Tbh I just lost a full day's pay on a cedar fence because I trusted the client's property line.
They pointed to an old stump and said 'it's right there', so I set the posts without a survey. Turns out we were a foot over and I had to pull three posts and reset them on my dime. How do you guys handle line checks when the markers are gone?

That's a tough lesson but one you only learn once. Never trust a client's word on a property line, even if they seem totally sure. A quick call to the county for the plat map or spending a couple hundred on a spot survey saves thousands in rework. Now I treat a missing pin as an automatic stop until I get something on paper.

But what if the client is a close friend or family member? You're going to demand they pay for a survey before you even start? That feels like a quick way to ruin a relationship. Sometimes you have to go off trust, especially on small jobs where a survey would cost more than the work itself.
