A total stranger in the hardware aisle gave me the best mortgage advice
He overheard me muttering about rates, said 'Forget the big banks, go straight to a local credit union.' I saved almost a full point on my rate. Anyone else have a random tip that actually worked?

Credit unions are the move. They have way lower fees too. My closing costs were almost half what the big bank quoted. Just gotta be a member, which is usually super easy.

My last mortgage was through a credit union, @casey_ramirez35, and honestly the process was a headache. Their tech was way behind, and getting a simple document took days of phone calls. The lower fees looked good on paper, but the slow service almost made me miss my closing date. I switched to a big bank for my refi and the difference in speed was huge. Sometimes you really do pay for convenience, and for me that's worth it.

Yeah, that "almost made me miss my closing date" part is the real nightmare. I had a similar thing with a car loan once, where they needed one more form and it took them a full week just to email it. You're sitting there waiting, and they're just in no hurry at all. The lower rate felt great until I was stuck in that waiting game. Sometimes the extra cost at a bigger place is just the price of not having your time wasted.
