Rant: walked through a new build near Austin and the walls felt like cardboard
I went to check out a model home in a new development off 183, and I swear I could hear the neighbors talking through the wall between the kitchen and bedroom. Is it normal for these places to feel so flimsy, or am I just being picky about my first house?

Man, I feel you on this one. What nobody talks about is that new builds often skip the fire blocking between floors and walls, which is basically just wood or foam that slows down flames and sound. Without it, voices travel through the stud cavity like a megaphone. I'd check if there's any insulation at all in the interior walls, because most builders only put it in the outside ones to meet code. That cardboard feeling is real, and it's not just your imagination.

Were you able to see what the builder packed between the studs, or was it just plain drywall on both sides? That usually tells you everything about soundproofing and overall construction quality.

Did you cut an outlet box out to peek inside? That's where you really see the cheap stuff.
