A lady in a red coat taught me the best trick for wilting hydrangeas

This was about 3 years ago at our shop in Ann Arbor. A woman came in looking really upset because the hydrangeas she bought for her daughter's wedding were drooping badly just hours before the ceremony. She said, 'I spent $200 on these and they look half dead.' I was about to suggest the usual warm water trick, but she cut me off. She told me to fill the sink with cool water, cut the stems again underwater, and then completely submerge the whole flower heads for 30 minutes. I was super skeptical, but we did it right there. When we pulled them out, they were totally perked up and looked brand new. I've used that method ever since for any sad hydrangeas that come through the door. Has anyone else found a weirdly specific trick from a customer that actually works?

Honestly, my best trick came from a guy trying to fix a wobbly table. He told me to put a dab of toothpaste on the leg, let it dry, and sand it smooth. I tried it on a cheap side table, fully expecting a minty mess, but it actually worked. My place still smells faintly of spearmint, but at least my coffee doesn't slide off anymore.

Totally get the minty smell thing. I used that trick on a bar stool once and my kitchen smelled like a dentist's office for a week. It's a solid fix though, especially for stuff you don't want to mess with too much. Kind of amazing what works when you're just trying to stop the wobble.

That sounds risky, submerging the whole flower head.
