A rainy night at the Portland Night Market made me rethink the whole 'line' thing

I was at the Portland Night Market maybe two months ago, and it was pouring. The usual huge line for the Korean corn dog truck was basically gone, just a couple of people. I figured, why not, and walked right up. The guy working the window was so happy to see someone, he gave me a free extra corn dog and we just chatted for a minute about the weather. It was honestly a better experience than any time I've waited 45 minutes for the same food on a sunny day. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me, but now I actively look for the trucks with the short or no line, especially if the weather is bad. You get your food faster, the people working are usually less stressed, and sometimes you even get a little bonus. Has anyone else had a surprisingly good time at a truck because you went when no one else did?

The long lines are half the fun for me.

Hey, that's a great point. So you basically got a better vibe and free food just by picking the empty spot. Makes me wonder, do you think the hype around long lines is mostly just fear of missing out? Like, if nobody was waiting, would we even want that corn dog as much?

Used to agree with sarah_hart, but this changed my mind.
