My buddy swore by this taco truck near downtown Austin, said the al pastor was the best he'd ever had. Drove 45 minutes there and it was closed for a private event.

Man I feel your pain. Took my family to a spot in San Antonio that had this legendary barbacoa, got there at 10am on a Saturday and the line was wrapped around the block. We waited an hour and a half only to find out they ran out of meat by 11. Now I always call ahead or check their social media before I make the drive, saved me a few times since then.

My wife calls this the "Taco Mirage" because you drive an hour thinking you're about to eat heaven and end up eating gas station snacks in the parking lot. I've learned to keep a backup taqueria in mind whenever I chase a rumor, saves me from eating my feelings in anger. These days I text the spot before I leave the driveway, beats showing up to a sad empty sign and a long line of disappointed people.

The universe really knows how to kick you in the shins sometimes, especially with taco trucks... @susan130 nailed it, checking their socials beforehand is pretty much a survival skill now. Last time I chased a rumor about a birria spot in Deep Ellum, I ended up circling a gas station for 20 minutes before realizing they were "temporarily closed" for three months. Better luck next time, I guess.
