Found a 1978 grocery list tucked in a library copy of 'The Hobbit' and it got me thinking

Actually it's the opposite, the book pages are acid free but old receipts aren't. That's why the list outlasted the paper it was tucked into.

That's actually a pretty common find in old books. The paper they used for receipts and lists back then had a different chemical makeup, so it doesn't yellow or crumble like regular notebook paper. Makes it last for decades tucked in there.
