Found a 1989 receipt for a book club in a used copy of 'The Hunt for Red October'

It was for a hardcover edition that cost $24.95, which was a lot back then. Seeing that price made me think about how I used to join those clubs without checking the fine print on the automatic shipments. I probably wasted close to $200 over a few years on books I didn't really want. Does anyone remember the specific pitfalls of those old mail-in book clubs?

The "automatic shipments" trap is why I finally read the fine print (and quit).

But what if the automatic shipments are actually a good thing? I set them up for stuff I always need anyway, like pet food or coffee. It saves me a trip to the store and I often get a discount. I just mark the date on my calendar so I remember to check if I need to skip a month. It works for me because I hate running out of things.

Wait, you actually remember to check your calendar every single month? That's the part that blows my mind! I'd set three alerts and still forget to skip the shipment. My pantry would be overflowing with coffee bags. It sounds like a good system if you're super organized, but I'd end up with a year's supply of dog food by accident.
