Found a 20 year old shopping list in a library book that was mostly just beef jerky cravings

I used to just flip through books real quick when checking them out, looking for dog-eared pages or maybe a stray receipt. But last month at the public library in Cincinnati, I found a proper folded list tucked inside an old Stephen King novel. The list was dated 2004 and had seven different kinds of beef jerky written on it, plus a post-it note that said 'don't forget the spicy sticks.' The handwriting was all sloppy, like someone wrote it while driving. It made me wonder what that person's deal was, you know? Now I always flip through the last forty pages of any used book I get because random grocery lists are way more interesting than I ever expected. Anyone else find weird food lists in their books? What's the strangest craving someone left behind?

That part about the person's handwriting being sloppy, like they wrote it while driving, really got me thinking. I found a similar thing in a romance novel at a used book sale once, a napkin with "extra pickles, no onions, and a milk shake" scribbled on it in pen that was practically bleeding through the paper. It was probably from a diner visit, but I always wondered if they were running errands or just super hungry. Made me feel connected to whoever left it, you know?

Oh man, that napkin sounds like such a neat little time capsule... I found a grocery list once tucked inside a library book, it had "cat food, birthday candle, duct tape" on it. Always wondered what kind of party that was for, you know? Makes you feel like you're peeking into someone's actual life for a second.

People really read way too much into a scrap of paper.
