Appreciation post: My old foreman told me to always pre-heat the flask, even on small jobs
I thought it was a waste of gas for years, until a cold snap in Chicago last winter made a whole batch of cores crumble. Anyone else have a simple rule they ignored and later regretted?

Yeah, the old guys are always right. Took a ruined pour and a massive cleanup to finally drill that into my head.

My first foreman had a rule about checking forms twice before a pour. Honestly, I thought it was a waste of time until I saw a whole section blow out. That lesson sticks with you.

Oh man, "ruined pour and a massive cleanup" is the absolute worst kind of teacher. It's like the concrete itself is laughing at you while you're shoveling. Susan's foreman had it right with that double check rule, it sounds boring until you're the one staring at a wall of mud where your form used to be. Those old guys have a scary number of stories that all end with "and that's why we do it this way." You only have to live through one of those messes to become a true believer.
