Got told my riser sleeve prep was sloppy by the new guy, of all people.

He pointed out I wasn't cleaning the sand out of the cavity enough before setting them, said it was causing gas holes in the castings. Started using a shop vac on every single one now. Anyone else have a simple step they were skipping that caused big problems?

Check the sleeve temp too, cold ones trap moisture.

Oh, that's a solid point about the brush. An air gun can just drive the sand deeper into the mold.

We had a similar issue with core prints on our old V-process line. Guys were rushing and just blowing them out with an air gun. Found out that was packing fine sand into the corners even worse. The foreman made everyone switch to a stiff bristle brush first, then vacuum. Cut our scrap rate for surface holes by half in a month.
