Heard a guy at the scrap yard say he never preheats his molds anymore
Said it saves a full hour on big pours and the castings come out fine. Anyone else skip the preheat on certain jobs?

Skipping preheat is a gamble. Cold molds can cause thermal shock, leading to hidden cracks or weak spots. For a simple garden bench, maybe it's fine, but I wouldn't risk it on anything structural. That saved hour could cost you a whole casting later.

Reminds me of a buddy who stopped torquing lug nuts to spec... said he could feel when they were tight enough. Worked fine until a wheel came off on the highway. Some shortcuts just store up trouble for later.
