My old foreman told me to always preheat the ladle before a pour, I ignored him once.

He said it would stop thermal shock and cracking. I was rushing a job in Toledo last winter and skipped it. The ladle cracked right down the side during the iron pour, lost about 200 pounds of metal. Now I'm a believer. Anyone ever had a similar rule they learned the hard way?

Learned that shortcuts in a hurry usually just make more work later.

Man, that'll do it. I used to think some of those old school rules were just guys being superstitious. Like we had this thing about never leaving a brush sitting in water overnight, said it would ruin the bristles. Thought it was nonsense until I wrecked a really expensive angled sash brush. Now I treat that rule like gospel.

Oh man, that's rough. My buddy learned a rule about never using an impact on lug nuts the hard way. He was swapping winter tires in a hurry and just zipped them all on with the gun. Next time he went to take them off, two of the studs sheared right off. The shop had a real fun time fixing that mess. Turns out the old guy telling him to always hand-tighten first wasn't just talking.
