Overheard a new guy call the furnace a 'big metal soup pot'
I was grabbing a coffee in the break area yesterday and this trainee from the temp agency was pointing at our main induction furnace. He told his buddy, 'Looks like a giant soup pot for metal soup.' I almost choked on my drink. It stuck with me all shift, watching the pour. Kind of does look like a weird, angry soup when you think about it. Anyone else have a funny name for a piece of gear at their shop?

That "angry soup" line is perfect... it's funny how often we do that, give normal things weird little names to make sense of them. I notice it everywhere now, like my friend calls his old truck the "rust bucket" and my kid says the vacuum is "eating the floor". We just can't help it. Makes the world feel smaller, I guess.

Notice how those names always come from a feeling, @alex307. Your friend's "rust bucket" sounds like tired love, and the vacuum "eating" is pure kid logic. Makes me wonder if the names we give things are less about the object and more about naming our own weird little moment with it.

Yeah, it's like we're all just making little inside jokes with the world (hey @alex307).
