A client in Chicago told me my invoices were confusing and it cost me a payment

I sent my usual invoice for a $750 project last month, just a simple PDF with line items. The client emailed back saying they couldn't match my hours to the project milestones and their finance team was holding payment. I switched to a free tool called Wave that lets me link each charge to a specific deliverable from our contract. Now I get paid in 5 days, not 30. Has anyone else found a better way to make invoices super clear?
