I thought charging $75 an hour for my writing was a joke, but a client in Austin actually paid it.
I'd been stuck at $30 for years, thinking no one would pay more. Then a tech startup reached out and their budget was double my rate. I was so sure they'd ghost me after I sent the quote, but they signed the contract the same day. Anyone else have a moment where they realized they were seriously undercharging?

Actually, signing the same day is not that insane for some clients. A lot of tech startups move super fast when they find what they need. They probably had the money set aside and just wanted the work done. The real lesson is that some clients value speed and skill way more than a cheap price. We get stuck thinking everyone shops for the lowest rate, but that is not always true. Good clients will pay for good work without making you wait.

Saw a post on another forum that said the price you charge is a signal. It tells clients what you think your work is worth. If you ask for more, serious clients often take you MORE seriously, not less. That startup probably saw your rate and thought they were getting a real pro who gets things done fast. We condition ourselves to be affordable, but some markets just do not work that way at all.

Wait, they signed the SAME DAY? How is that even possible? I've had clients take weeks just to read an email. That's actually insane. Good for you, but man, that really shows how much we sell ourselves short sometimes.
