Pro tip: A random guy at a Phoenix co-working space saved my bacon last month

I was totally stuck on a project scope and this older designer saw me staring at my screen, bought me a soda, and said 'charge for the problem, not the hours, kid'. That one line flipped a switch for me. How do you guys figure out your pricing when a project gets weird?

That advice can be a trap for new people though... charging for the problem sounds smart until you get a client who creates endless new problems. Sometimes you just need a clear hourly rate when things go off the rails.

That's a solid piece of advice. I once quoted a flat rate for a simple move, then the client's "few boxes" turned out to be a hoarder's apartment. I learned to price the headache, not the truck space. Now my estimates have a lot more "what if" clauses.

Oh man, I feel that. I once showed up to a "small job" that needed a full dumpster. Now my contracts are longer than some books.
