Funny how I fought against using a tack cloth until it saved my finish from dust nightmares.
I thought it was extra work, but one dusty shop day showed me how key it is for a clean coat.

My garage workshop last spring. Skipped the tack cloth on a walnut desk top. Convinced myself the air compressor blast was enough. Ended up with a finish that looked like it had glitter. But it was just dust. Now I treat that sticky cloth like my last line of defense. Even if I just vacuumed.

Yeah that "dust nightmares" line is way too real. I did the same thing with a tabletop polyurethane coat last summer. Skipped the tack cloth because my shop looked clean. Ended up with three dust nibs baked right into the finish on the last coat. Had to sand the whole thing back. Now I wipe everything down twice, even if I just blew it off with air. That sticky grab gets the tiny bits that just float back down.

I always thought tack cloths were overkill for a quick wipe down. Then one stray hair got stuck in my lacquer finish on a guitar body. That single screw up taught me to never skip the sticky grab step again.
