Rant: I always thought using a heat gun to strip paint was a huge fire risk until I tried it on a 1920s oak dresser with 8 layers of old enamel and it was the cleanest strip I've ever done... what old-school method were you totally wrong about?
My boss in Cincinnati showed me his technique with a low setting and constant movement, and after stripping three pieces this way with zero scorch marks, I'm a total convert.

So you're telling me the trick is to just not set the wall on fire, @graydavis? My first try looked like a dragon sneezed on the pipes.

Man, I felt the same way about using a propane torch on old plumbing! I was sure I'd burn the house down. But my uncle, who's been a handyman forever, walked me through heating the fitting slowly and keeping the flame moving. It felt totally wrong, but that old solder joint gave up clean in about ten seconds flat. Changed my whole view on it.
