I used to cut the cooling short to move faster. One piece popping from stress taught me to never skip the wait.

Come on, that's just being way too careful. I crack my kiln lid as soon as the elements shut off to speed up the cool down all the time. Most of my stuff is simple shapes and they come out fine, no cracks. You just gotta know what your clay and glazes can handle.
