Shoutout to the plant manager who tried to help with a bearing pull

We were swapping out a stuck bearing on a big press. The manager walks up, takes a hammer, and says he knows how it's done. He hit it way too hard and put a nick in the shaft. Now we need a new part and the production line is stuck. Trying not to laugh while telling the boss was pure pain.

I used to figure a manager jumping in to help was always a good thing. Saw it as them getting their hands dirty with the team. But hearing about that nick in the shaft, and knowing what that downtime costs, it flipped my view. Sometimes the help ends up being the most expensive part of the job. Makes you see those office skills and knowing when to step back as way more important.

Man, that hits home. I've watched bosses dive in to "help" and just slow everything down because they're out of practice. You gotta learn to spot when your hands-on skills aren't sharp anymore and let the crew do their job. Real help is making sure they have what they need and staying out of the way. It's a tough lesson, but it saves so much cash and headache.

That nick probably cost twenty grand in downtime alone.
