Late material deliveries on remote sites: just part of the job or a fixable problem?
Last month on a pipeline project in the boonies, our sand bedding shipment showed up two days late, which cascaded into major downtime. Some crew members say delays are inevitable with rural logistics and we should just build in buffer time. I argue that we need to hold suppliers accountable or switch to ones with better tracking and commitments. Where do you all stand on this? Is it time to stop accepting these hiccups as normal?

Dealing with late deliveries out in the sticks is always a headache, lol. On a fencing job last year up in the hills, our post concrete mix was a day late and threw the whole schedule off. I started requiring GPS tracking from suppliers and moved to local vendors when possible. It added a bit to the cost, but the reduced downtime was worth it. Holding them accountable with penalty clauses in contracts made a difference too. Now we build in some buffer, but only after verifying supplier reliability.

Yeah, the 'out in the sticks' headache is real, my buddy ran into that last spring. He was overseeing a cabin build way off the grid, and the lumber shipment got held up for three days because the truck took a wrong turn on some unmarked forest road. Had the whole crew sitting around, burning through labor costs with nothing to show for it. He ended up switching to a supplier that uses satellite trackers and now insists on daily check-ins for any remote delivery. Says the peace of mind is worth the premium, and he’ll never go back to rolling the dice with an unreliable vendor.

Wait, you guys are just building in buffer time like it's no big deal? I mean, two days late on sand bedding and the whole project grinds to a halt, that's a massive financial hit. Idk, maybe it's just me but treating that as inevitable feels like giving up before you even start. You gotta lean on suppliers with real tracking and slap them with penalties when they mess up, otherwise nothing changes.
