Seeing rain barrels everywhere on my route changed my mind on home upgrades.
Catching rainwater is an easy way to save money and help the planet.

Ever notice how one small change can spiral? My buddy Sam got a single rain barrel as a gift, just a basic one. He used it to water his tomato plants and figured that was that. Then he started using the water to rinse off his patio furniture and wash his car. By the end of the summer, his outdoor tap use had pretty much stopped. His water bill dropped enough that he bought two more simple plastic barrels this spring.

Wow, I used to brush off stuff like rain barrels as too small to matter, but hearing how Sam's habit actually stacks up really makes me reconsider.

But what happens to all that plastic when the barrels wear out?
