Vent: Adopting a no-exceptions harness rule transformed my approach to safety.

I used to brush off fall protection for quick repairs, thinking it slowed us down too much. After a close call that shook me, I mandated harnesses for every job, and we haven't had a single incident since. How do you handle pushback from guys who think it's unnecessary overhead?

Absolutely, and good for you. That pushback is just noise, man. The guys complaining about overhead have never seen what a fall does to a family or a crew, it's not a paperwork problem. Your job as the one in charge is to absorb that grumbling and wear it, because the alternative is carrying something way heavier. It transforms from an annoying rule to just how things are done, and then everyone sleeps better.

Man, that part about not seeing what a fall does really sticks with me. I knew a guy who used to skip harness checks because it slowed him down. One day, he slipped off a roof but got lucky, just a broken arm. After that, he became the biggest safety nut on the crew, always yelling at new guys to clip in. It's like you said, the grumbling stops when people finally get why the rules are there.
