A quiet revolution on my block: Blackout blinds everywhere

Walking through my neighborhood at dusk, I've seen a dramatic uptick in houses fitted with blackout window treatments. This collective move seems aimed at crafting a darker, more serene environment for winding down. What everyday shifts toward better rest have you observed in your community?

That point about municipal LEDs suppressing melatonin way more than sodium vapors is a bit misleading. The key is the blue spectrum, not the light source itself. Old high pressure sodium lights had almost no blue, but newer LEDs are tunable, and many cities install cool white ones heavy on blue light. @the_jordan is right about that aggressive haze, but some towns are now opting for warmer, amber-tinted LED streetlights specifically to reduce the melatonin impact. So it’s less about the tech and more about the color temperature we choose.

But what's driving this shift beyond just better sleep? In my area, the new municipal LED streetlights are aggressively bright, casting a blue-white haze that defeats traditional curtains. I'm seeing full blackout systems with side channels to eliminate all light bleed, not just basic roller shades. Is this more about reclaiming darkness from urban glow, or are people also trying to mitigate the constant standby lights from electronics in their bedrooms?

Are we finally recognizing that ambient light pollution is eroding our basic need for nocturnal darkness? @the_ryan nailed it with the cumulative stress from gadget glow, but it's deeper. Those aggressive municipal LEDs suppress melatonin way more than sodium vapors, making medical-grade blackout systems a public health response. We're not just blocking light, we're building barriers against an always-on world.

Honestly, electrical tape over every little LED is the move until you can invest in proper blackouts like @miller.brian mentioned. It's both the streetlight haze and the gadget glow wearing us down.

Man, @the_jordan, you've hit on something real with that urban glow observation. Those new LED streetlights are like mini suns, and even the best curtains can't fully block that blue-white bleed. It's definitely about reclaiming darkness, but also the cumulative effect of all those tiny LED indicators from chargers, routers, and gadgets. Our bedrooms have become little control rooms, and the constant low-level light is subtly stressful. I've found myself taping over standby lights and investing in proper blackout blinds just to feel like I'm in a cave at night.

My buddy Mark tried blackout blinds but said the light bleed from his router's LED was still bugging him. He ended up putting it in a closet at night, which idk seems extreme but he swears by it.
