Hot take: skip the oil spray for frozen fries and get way better crunch
I used to always hit my frozen fries with a quick spray of avocado oil before throwing them in the air fryer. Thought it was necessary to get them crispy. One day about 3 weeks ago I was out of spray oil and just tossed the fries in dry out of the bag. Set it to 400F for 12 minutes and shook halfway. They came out way crunchier and less greasy than before. Now I do that for any frozen potato product like tater tots or hash browns. Only thing I still use oil for is homemade fresh cut fries. Anyone else ditch the oil on frozen stuff and notice a difference?
Dude I had basically the exact same experience. I was making tots one night and just flat out forgot to spray them. Figured they'd be trash but tossed em in anyway at 390 for like 10 minutes. Came out way better than usual, super crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Now I never oil frozen stuff either. Tried it with some crinkle cuts last week and same thing. The only adjustment I make is I let the fries sit out on the counter for like 5 minutes before I cook them so they aren't ice cold when they hit the basket.
You ever try shaking the basket halfway through for tots? I do that with mine and they come out even better. @king.aaron has the right idea about letting them sit out first, that definitely helps. I actually do the same thing with frozen hash browns now too, no oil at all. Just toss them in at 400 and let them go until they look right. Saves some calories and cleanup is way easier.
