My frozen fries turned into a smoky mess at 400 degrees

I was making a quick dinner in my kitchen and tossed a full bag of frozen fries into the air fryer basket. They must have been coated in too much oil because after about 8 minutes, the whole unit started billowing smoke and set off my detector. What's the best way to cook frozen fries without setting off the alarms?

Disagree about the timing being so critical. I find they turn out fine even if you're a little off. The method itself matters more than perfect seconds.
