The duct-taped fry basket in my parents' basement made me rethink my air fryer
I was clearing out my parents' basement last weekend and found the deep fry basket my mom used for years, the one with the handle wrapped in about four layers of duct tape. She made everything in that thing, fries, chicken, even whole corn on the cob, and it took forever to heat up the oil and then even longer to clean the splatter off the stove. Seeing it next to my air fryer sitting on the counter made me realize how much the actual cooking ritual has changed, not just the time. I used to think air fryers were just a gimmick for people who didn't want to admit they were baking their food, but after three years of using mine for frozen pierogies and brats, I've come around. The texture is different, sure, but I'll take a dry counter over that greasy fog any day. My mom still insists it's not the same, but she also asked me to make her some crispy chickpeas this Sunday, so I think she's coming around too. Anyone else keep an old oil fryer around for sentimental reasons, or did you just toss it in the recycling bin?
