Tried making frozen fries without preheating the air fryer and they came out limp and sad

I got home late from work last night and was starving, so I just tossed a handful of frozen waffle fries into the basket and hit start at 400 degrees. I figured it would save time since I didn't have to wait for that preheat cycle. Big mistake. After 15 minutes they were pale and soft, not crispy at all, like they had been sitting out in the rain. I ended up putting them back in for another 8 minutes and they still weren't right. My wife just shook her head and said I should have known better after using this thing for two years. Has anyone else tried skipping the preheat and had the same bad luck, or does it work okay for different foods?

Got a buddy at work who tried exactly this with his air fryer and some tater tots, swore he'd save three minutes by skipping the preheat. He ended up with a basket full of sad, oily little rocks that somehow were both soggy on the outside and burnt on the inside. Said his kid took one bite, made a face, and asked if they could order pizza instead.

Air fryer 101 says preheating is a gimmick and honestly I never do it for my frozen fries. The manual for my Cosori literally says it's optional because the rapid air circulation compensates fast enough. I dump frozen crinkle cuts in cold and run them at 390 for 18 minutes, they come out perfectly golden with zero limpness every time.

Oh man, I feel your pain. Done the exact same thing with sad results.
