Honestly I learned this one the hard way with a phone charger that started smoking while I was asleep. Scared me enough that I went through every cheap cable and brick in my house and tossed them all. It's not worth saving twenty bucks when your whole place could go up. Now I only buy stuff from brands I actually recognize and check for the safety labels.

Used to think brand name stuff was a total SCAM but now I get that cheap electronics are a legit fire hazard. Glad you're okay man that could have been way worse.
