An installer in Tulsa told me he labels every zone wire BEFORE pulling it, and I finally tried it
Was at a supply house in Tulsa last month and got talking to a guy who has been doing this 22 years. He said he tags both ends of every zone wire with a number before it goes in the wall. I always labeled after the pull, which meant guessing when two wires came out of the same hole. Tried his way on a 16 zone job last week and the panel dress out went twice as fast. Anyone else label before the pull, or am I the last guy to figure this out?

Tagging both ends before the pull is solid, but here's the thing people always get wrong about it. The tag on the far end only helps you if it actually survives the pull. Tape and sharpie can rub right off in a pipe full of other wires, and then you're back to guessing. Use real wire markers or number tags and wrap them tight, way better than marker. Also number your spools or boxes at the same time so you're not trying to read a smeared number at 3pm when you just want to get home. Been doing it this way for years and the time you save in the panel is only half the win, the other half is not pulling a wire twice.
