I finally called out a homeowner for mounting their panel in the laundry room
Got called to a house in San Antonio yesterday to fix a system that kept false alarming. Walked in and saw the main panel mounted right above the washer, already covered in lint dust after 6 months. I asked the homeowner who installed it and he said some national company did it last spring. Had to explain that high humidity and lint will eat those contacts alive over time. Anyone else dealing with lazy installs that ignore basic placement rules?

Three years I've had my panel in the garage next to the water heater in Houston. Zero issues. Lint isn't great but a sealed panel box handles it fine as long as the door is shut. The bigger problem is probably that the installer didn't use proper gaskets or seal the knockouts. Company I used for a friend's house put one in a mudroom and it's been five years with no false alarms. Sometimes the location complaint is just an excuse for bad workmanship.

Read somewhere that sealed boxes solve most of the garage panel problems.

Wait, hold on - you're telling me someone actually put the panel in a mudroom? Like, a room where people come in with wet shoes and muddy boots and all that? That's wild. I guess if they sealed everything up right it could work, but I feel like that's asking for trouble with the moisture and dirt getting tracked in all the time. Three years is impressive though, I'll give them that - especially in Houston with all that humidity. It just seems like people hear "sealed box" and think they can put it anywhere without thinking about the actual environment.
