Read in a trade mag that 1 in 5 break-ins happen through an unlocked window, so I started testing my own installs
I was flipping through a security trade magazine at the supply house in Tulsa last Thursday and a stat jumped out at me. It said about 20 percent of home break-ins happen through an unlocked window or door, which means the alarm never even gets a chance to trip. That number bugged me because I have been selling fancy glass break sensors and motion detectors to folks who leave their kitchen window cracked all summer. So I started doing a quick walk around every finished job and pointing out the easy stuff before I hand over the code. Last week a customer in Broken Arrow told me her teenager leaves the garage side door open all night. Do you guys do a final walk with the homeowner, or just hand them the app and go?

Watched a buddy of mine learn this the hard way last spring. He installed a full system for a guy in Owasso, nice panel, glass breaks, the works. Two months later the guy calls him mad as hell because someone walked in through his back door while he was at work. Turns out the guy had been leaving it unlocked on purpose so his dog could get in and out. My buddy never asked, never checked, just handed him the app and left. Now he does a lap around the house with every customer, opens every door and window, makes them lock it back up themselves. Takes ten extra minutes and saved him at least one angry phone call.
