Spent 4 hours chasing a ground fault on a 16 zone panel in a house off Riverside Dr
Last Thursday I got called out to a house near Riverside Dr for a panel that kept showing a ground fault on zone 9. I figured it was a bad contact on a window sensor, maybe 30 minutes tops. I put my meter on the loop and got 2.1 megohms, which looked fine at first. I swapped the sensor anyway, no change. I started pulling wires off the terminals one by one to isolate the zone, and that is when I noticed the reading would jump around when I wiggled the bundle in the attic. Turned out a staple from the original install had rubbed through the jacket on the common leg where it crossed a joist, and it only shorted when the AC kicked on and the ductwork moved. Total time was 4 hours, 3 trips up and down a pull down ladder, and a lot of cussing. I ended up re running that 15 foot section with a piece of smurf tube. How do you guys track down intermittent grounds without just replacing the whole loop?
