That $400 'universal' keypad adapter was a total dud for me
I spent $400 on a universal keypad adapter hoping it would bridge my old DSC panel with a new Honeywell system on a commercial job in Austin last month. It claimed to work with 12 different panels but only synced with about half the zones before throwing errors. After three hours of troubleshooting and a call to their tech line, they admitted the firmware had a known bug for my setup. Had to rip it out and go with a dedicated translator module instead, which cost another $350 but worked first try. Anyone else had bad luck with those combo adapters or found one that actually delivers?

Yeah those universal translators are basically a roll of the dice, the firmware on most of them is way behind the actual hardware updates. Glad the dedicated module worked out though, sometimes you just gotta pay for the right tool.

Had a similar thing happen with my translation module actually. Bought one of those all-in-one jobbers and it worked okay for basic stuff like ordering food but anything more complicated than that and it would just give up. Swapped over to a dedicated unit from a smaller company like a year ago and the difference is night and day. It handles slang and regional dialects way better too, which was a big problem with the universal ones. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for with these things, especially when dealing with languages that have a lot of local variations. The firmware updates on the dedicated ones actually come regular instead of once every six months like the bigger brands too.
