That time I tripped a fire alarm in a server room because I didn't check the wire colors first

I was running a new zone in a data center near Boston about 6 months ago and crossed a couple of wires on the panel by accident, which sent a general alarm signal to the monitoring station at 3 AM and the client's security guy showed up in his pajamas yelling at me while I stood there holding my screwdriver like an idiot, has anyone else had a late night call go completely sideways from something stupid like that?

Holy crap, double taping unused terminals? That's genius. I've never thought of that but it makes total sense. I've definitely zapped myself by accident touching a live screw on a panel before and sent a trouble signal across the whole building. It's one of those simple things you don't realize you need until someone points it out. I'm definitely adding that to my kit tomorrow.

Holding the screwdriver and freezing is a universal feeling in that moment, I've been there. One thing though, testing continuity and polarity with a jumper while the panel is off won't help if you already crossed the wires on the terminals themselves. You'd need to check the actual wiring path before you land anything, not just the circuit side, to catch that mistake.

Man that's brutal. Three AM pajama guy is the worst. First thing I learned after my own midnight screwup is to always keep a short jumper wire in your pocket for testing zones before you land them on the panel. You can check continuity and polarity on the actual circuit while the panel is still off, and it saves you from setting off a false alarm because the monitor station sees a sudden resistance change. Also helps to double tape any unused terminals so you don't accidentally touch them with your screwdriver - I've seen that send a trouble signal more times than I can count.
